When in doubt, smack your head on the keyboard!

January 17, 2006 – 6:02 pm

*****UPDATE*****  Well as you may have realized, it’s not being able to vote at all, to being able to vote as much and as fast as the poll tool will cycle.  I have a support ticket into the technical people with the voting tool.  As soon as I hear something, I will let you know.  I have disabled the multiple voting.  So you will see the “you have already voted” unless of course you hack your way in to the system!  Suddenly the voting is becoming less and less of a part of the contest!  Sheesh!  You know, if we had a reliable voting system available to us out their in internet land, this would be much easier!  I’m beginning to get light headed from the loss of blood!

When in doubt hold your mouth right and commence smacking your forehead against the keyboard until either the problem is fixed or you pass out.  Unfortunately, we have had to rinse and repeat here a few times since getting the blog voting to work properly.  It took so long because each time we were unconscious a little longer.

In other words, while I clean the blood off the keyboard, monitor and desk, you can invite those that have not been able to vote before now to vote for you every 24 hours.  I am very sorry if this is made it difficult on anyone, but we have figured out the problem and all should be able to vote again!  I will be monitoring for you cheaters out there, and when I catch you…...well, I’ll send the mob after you!

  2. um… i could be wrong, but it seems to me like you can vote as many times as you want whenever you want at the moment… I discovered by accident, I was checking the whole 24 hour thing…

  3. I have suddenly gotten a SLEW of repeat votes, and emails telling me that people are finally able to vote again. Before I’d just been getting emails saying they’d only been able to vote once the whole contest. So something must have changed. And my votes have jumped WAY up. So everyone get the word out for people to try, try again!

  4. It won’t accept any of my votes. It says I already voted, even though it was days ago…

  5. While you get an A+ for effort, I’m sorry to inform you that I still can’t vote. I get the “you already voted” message while I haven’t voted since the first day it was opened.

  6. As Belinda says above, she got a ton of votes this evening. Almost 200 over the course of an hour or so. We were running pretty close, but with a gulf of 200 votes now I think there’s no way our little blog or any of the others in our category (best new blog) will ever be able to catch up, even with 13 days left.

And that’s okay with me. This competition is just for fun and I don’t feel entitled to whining. The rules are the rules and I think we should just stick by them. Glitches will happen but I don’t think anyone should lose any sleep over it. Jim, you have given this your all (and then some) and as far as I’m concerned you should just let the voting happen and not give any complaints another second of your thoughts. Go home, spend some quality time with the genuine family, and congratulate yourself for bringing everybody together like this.

At least you don’t work for Diebold!

  7. I realize you’re working hard on this, but I can’t vote twice either, and I haven’t tried in days.

Does the software use cookies or IP addresses? If it’s cookies, my guess is that anti-virus or anti-spyware software won’t allow the external deletion of a cookie.

  8. I agree with frankp—now votes seem unlimited. I was able to vote twice for a blog within 24 hrs.

I’m sorry this is so frustrating for you!

Somewhere in cyberspace there has to be an easier answer.

  9. Dutch, at 5:30, my blog and the contest information were mentioned on a local TV/Radio simulcast program, and that’s when everything got crazy. BUT—about an hour later, I got one email from someone who told me she had been able to vote “several times,” and I informed Jim of this right away. I expected a jump in my votes after 5:30pm yesterday, but that big a jump I did not anticipate.

I’m to the point where I’m thinking we just toss the voting and let the panels decide on the merits of the sites?

And hey, your “little blog” ain’t as little as my “little blog!” ;-)

  10. Just for future reference…voting for the “Webbies” was strictly regulated, and counted your ISP down to the minute so you could only vote every 24 hours. I don’t know what they used, but it did show a running tally.

  11. Golly! I only came here by chance. Who would have thought there could be such a hot bed of angst about a competition? What possible prize could you be offering to induce such ‘head banging’?
    Perhaps I should investigate further.
Cheers dears – keep your Band-aides handy
