“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.”

December 8, 2006 – 8:14 am

This is the Pearl Harbor movie version of the quote attributed to Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I would have done this post yesterday on the anniversary, but the giant was still asleep.

It is that time of year again as we ramp up to begin The Best of Blogs Awards 2006. We have some very exciting news this year and we are not yet going to spill the beans until the ink is dry, but suffice it to say that this year’s awards will far outweigh anything we have ever done in the past.

We are taking suggestions for categories this year at the moment and would love to have all of your suggestions. If we have any volunteers for working behind the scenes, we would love to hear from you as well. My email is below or feel free to use the comments section. We will have buttons and banners for those wanting to help promote the awards as soon as I can muster enough “volunteer” work. We will be giving out plenty of links to those that can lend a hand, and would love to add you on our sponsor list.

Many of the other blogging award sites are now wrapping up or are nearly completed. Our awards will be a little more exciting than a few days of nominations and mass voting for a few days and then sit back until the ride is over. We would like all of you to keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all time and make sure you are belted and ready, because this BoB 2006 will be the wildest ride any of us have seen. We will have our usual format and mission, but the end results will surprise even the best of our critics.

My email for those interested in being a volunteer, those interested in sponsorship of the awards, and those that might just have a question I can answer is jturner [at] onebyonemedia [dot] com. If any of you want to tell your friends about nominations and categories, now is the time to awaken that giant in your blog and get out the word!

  2. We can volunteer and we won’t be prejudice. We did nominate a couple of blogs for the weblog awards, but is was the larger blogs which ended up with the nominations. It’s all good fun for us just reading the blogs anyway.

We have been reading blogs for a coupe of years, read the lesser known blogs (though we think the ones we read are quality) sometimes we read the larger heavily subscribed to blogs.
Our education is geology and public relations but I’m sure there is something we can help with.

We have a new appreciation for the blogs we read and the new ones we find every day. After starting our blog we found it is much more difficult to keep up a blog than we expected, at least a quality blog which keeps even a few readers coming back for more.

  11. Good on you, Jim! I applaud your continued commitment to the blogging community with BOB! If you DO give an award for blogs written by cats, I second the nomination of Max at Psychokitty.

Have you considered the really fine blogs that focus on environment and natural science and basically, day after day, pay tribute to our home?
Florida Cracker at http://pureflorida.blogspot.com/ is a great example of this type of writing and there are numerous others gaining readership each day. The nice thing about these blogs is that they bring the natural world to the lay reader in a way that is interesting, humourous and rife with great photos.

Good luck with this years BOB!

  12. When do the awards start ?
I was just looking at the weblog awards site and damn it if isn’t a little insane where all the people are complaining of cheating and they have removed votes due to them all coming from the same ip address. If it is that complicated to run an award I wonder of it’s worth it.

I always thought awards should be fun, but looking over that site itl
looks like it can turn sort of ugly.

  13. I am confused as to when the voting begins. The rules say December 19, 2005, but that was for last year, right? Have I already missed the voting for this year?

  14. What were we supposed to do again?
I would volunteer for whatever it is you need but I’ll be spending some time in a hospital bed with a delicate transplant soon.
