Don’t Limit Your Blog To One Category

March 17, 2008 – 5:21 am

As we kick off the second week of nominations one thing I’ve quickly noticed is that as bloggers we tend to think of our sites as one-dimensional in terms of what they are about. Just because you write about life as a single father doesn’t mean you’re simply a Daddy Blogger. Depending on what’s going on in your life you could very well be an inspiration to others. What about mommy bloggers who home school their children? Would they fit best in the Best Mommy category or Best Education/Home Schooling category? What about music blogs that just got started in 2007 and haven’t built a following yet? My point is that just from going over who was nominated during the first week of this year’s Best Of Blog awards, I find that not every site can be pinned down to one topic. For every nomination there seems to be anywhere from 2-3 different groups they might fit in.

Of course what all this multiple category talk all means is that bloggers have a better chance of making it to one of the final 10 spots. Two weeks from now when the nominations come to a close, a jury made up of various writers, bloggers, etc…will narrow down all the nominated blogs for each category and announce the Top 10 for each. These Top 10’s will all be unique to that category and no two categories will have any sites in common. This way we don’t end up with a single site winning a BoB in 2 or more categories. What this means for you the blogger is that though you may not be picked as one of the best in one category, you may be perfect for another.  For example: Say you’re site was started in 2007 and is about a dad who is overweight and wants to prolong his life while at the same time teach his kids the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. That’s Best New, Best Daddy, Best Health, Best Inspirational!! Four chances to make it to one of the Top 10 spots and then it’s up to the public to decide who has the Best Blog.

Regardless of if you’ve already nominated somebody or are about to, think about what exactly is being written by the author and how that relates to the 23 categories we have this year. You just might discover your favorite site is better than you think it is.

  2. interesting ill have to try to not limit my sites to one thing people have always told me to focus and whatever but you have a good point that in reality each post is its own page why not be creative and interesting and give something for everybody
